A pediatric dentist is one who specializes in the dental care of infants of around 6 months of age (6 months is the usual age when a child gets their first tooth) until their early teenage years. Their education and training make them the optimal choice for your child’s oral health.
Training to become a pediatric dentist requires 4 years of dental schooling along with child development courses, classes in psychology and a 2 -year residency working with infants, young children, children with special needs and teenagers. If they are going to start their own practice, which most do, some business management courses will be included in their curriculum as well. They then need to pass The National Board Dental Examination administered by the ADA (American Dental Association).
The AAPD (American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry) along with the AAP (American Academy of Pediatrics) strongly recommends that a child’s first visit to the dentist should occur within 6 months of their first tooth, or by their first birthday at the very latest. This is to help ensure that good dental habits are formed early and to detect and treat tooth decay and other oral health issues as early as possible. Catching tooth decay and other oral problems early will help ensure that the corrective actions are as simple and painless as possible. Forming a healthy bond and good communication between the child and dentist is vital as well.
A pediatric dentist is the best suited for the oral care of your child. As stated above, all of their training is focused on caring for children from their first tooth through their adolescent period of life. Their expertise is certain to ensure good oral health not just through their childhood and adolescence, but by forming good oral heal habits, into adulthood as well.
